Amos |
(Amos 01) General Impression |
3505 |
The book of Amos is characterized by God's fiery judgments against the shocking sinfulness of the land during a day of outward prosperity. God picked Amos, a country preacher, to preach in a rude and rough way to the big city folks. Amos' key verse, "Let justice roll down like waters", points to only two ways to live: either hungering after righteousness or after unrighteousness. |

(Amos 02) Chapter 1 |
3505 |
The main contribution of Amos is to give us a passionate love for righteousness and a passionate hatred for unrighteousness. Satan's substitute for the message of Amos is doing what's expedient (what's best for me) rather than doing what's right. Amos was a God-educated preacher whose preaching methods and illustrations are a goldmine. |

The fiery judgments preached by Amos against unrighteousness warn against the danger of a false hope and neglect of great light of revelation. God is patient and judgment is a last resort. Restoration is to the Lord Himself, not to a thing. |

God must judge because people have chosen sin. Amos preached with his life, not just with his lips. In Amos we see that a real man of God is obedient to the LORD, possesses holy boldness, and is educated by God not man. The vision of the basket of ripe summer fruit warns that if you won't make an end of sin, God will make an end of you. |

(Amos 07) Conclusion |
3505 |
Chapter 9 concludes the great message of Amos of God pouring out fiery wrath on all sin by the vision of the Lord standing by the altar ready to cast it down. God's judgment will fall on any false religion that looks like the true; likewise God stands by to judge anything false in our lives. The book closes with one of the greatest restorations in the minor prophets. The outcome of judgment is not further judgments but restoration blessing, which Ed shows as preliminary restoration, progressive restoration, and permanent restoration. |
