Reality Epistles |
James |
(James 01) Introduction |
4501 |
The book of James is the first of the reality epistles that check the reality of the message of redemption in the books the precede it. James drives you back to Jesus Christ our High Priest in the book of Hebrews. When I am real in my practical Christianity, it will have strong doctrinal undergirding and theological devotion. |

(James 02) Birdseye View |
4501 |
James presses home the message that God has made every provision that we can be real through and through. The humanly impossible standards James brings forth to test the reality of our faith are to drive us back to Jesus, our High Priest (e.g. book of Hebrews). Though the Lord Jesus is mentioned only twice, it is thoroughly Christ-centered in that its high standards drive us to Christ. It provides helpful methods for preaching to be encouraging, down-to-earth, and simple. |

(James 03) New Covenant Obedience |
4501 |
Every commandment of God is a new covenant commandment; God will work it in me. God's grace the law a law of liberty. Every chapter in James cuts across the grain of the natural heart and is grounded in the lordship of Jesus Christ. The Christian life is summarized as asking God, who gives with both hands, for the reality of faith that expresses itself as a miracle life. |

(James 04) Chapter 1: Trial & Patient Waiting Upon the Lord |
4501 |
Apart from trial and trouble in my life, my character will be incomplete. Trials make you like Jesus. Trials drive you to the Lord for wisdom. Patience is continued obedience. True faith blames God for nothing bad and gives Him credit for everything good. |

(James 05) Chapter 1:19-2:13 - Reality Tests |
4501 |
If we have been born of God's will, we will live for His will. A right attitude towards the Word of God is a great safeguard against temptation. The chief features of a person rightly related to the Word of God is constantly seeing one's heart in the mirror, salvation, and liberty. Being a respecter of persons is an evidence of unreality that drives me back to my great High Priest who alone can keep me rightly related to God. |

(James 06) Chapters 2-3 - Reality Tests Continued |
4501 |
James 2:14-26 is a key section of the entire book that declares that real faith does not remain alone but is rich in good works. Though Paul and James appear on the surface to contradict each other, in reality they complement each other, Paul stating faith as the grounds of eternal life while James giving faith as a description of it. Paul attacks legalism; James attacks dead orthodoxy. |

(James 08) Chapters 4-5 - Reality Tests Continued |
4501 |
Worldliness is not just being free from questionable practices. Worldliness is much broader according to James, encompassing pride, divisiveness, a critical spirit, worry, and self-planning. Patience is a test of reality. Real patiences waits for Jesus from heaven, not just to get out an awful mess. |

(James 09) Chapter 5 - Scriptural Healing |
4501 |
The prayer of faith is based upon the known will of God. Oil has two interpretations: a picture of the Holy Spirit or a symbol of medicine. Ed shares 7 principles that all believers agree on for divine healing, such as all healing is of God and is based on the blood of Christ. The purpose for any prayer or healing is the glory of God. |

(James 10) Chapter 5 - Conclusion |
4501 |
The book of James ends on the redemption from sin, pointing out that all real works are redemptive. When you have the power of the Holy Spirit, you have the power to perform. James' emphasis is on the law of liberty; it becomes bondage when I do it in my own strength. |

(James 11) Chapter 5:13-19 - Spiritual Restoration |
4501 |
Anointing with oil pictures the spiritual reality of the presence of the Lord that clings to us. God's real desire is to heal the inward man. Oil is a reminder of God's willingness to restore. Unanswered prayer (a "closed heaven") is the Lord's mercy to let you see your sin-sick condition. |
