(John 01) Introduction 2007 |
4106 |
Why should we study the Gospel of John? The Gospel of John differs from Matthew, Mark and Luke that report the history in that John explains it. John is one of the simplest books in the Bible, using simple words to explain lofty thoughts. Finally, the Gospel of John is a heart book that answers who Jesus Christ is, what faith is, and what life is. |

(John 02) Prologue: The Word |
4106 |
The prologue to the Gospel of John is a "Christ-scape"--a spectacular look at our Lord Jesus Christ! It begins with Christ being the Word and ends (in verse 18) as Christ being the One who explains the Father. We are being introduced to a God who wants to be revealed, discovered and unveiled--and Jesus Christ is the revealer! |

God wants to be known so He had to create a whole universe and write eternity (the conscience) on the heart of every man. In Christ alone we have the revelation of God. Therefore, the only way not to neglect the Father or the Spirit is to go after Jesus. |

(John 04) Chapter 1: Christ is Everything |
4106 |
John sweeps across chapter 1 with title after title of the Lord Jesus Christ to show us the fullness of the One we're about to study. What is faith? Faith is just receiving a Gift. The Christian life is never more complicated than appropriating Christ Himself. |

Faith is just receiving the Lord Jesus over and over again. The chapter ends with a number of seekers with an emphasis on finding. What is life? Life is discovering Jesus (eureka!) John the Baptizer signifies that every true ministry is a forerunning ministry that prepares us for the One who comes after to do the real ministry! |

4106 |
The Lord Jesus' first miracle is a key miracle that sheds light on all His miracles. All miracles are not an end in themselves but point to something better. Who is Jesus? He is the joy giver by transformation! If Christ doesn't show up, what we bring will run out, whether it be a wedding, a marriage, a trial or the whole Christian life. |

(John 08) Chapter 2: Wedding - What is Life / Intro To Cleansing |
4106 |
The Christian can expect the best when the world expects the worst; your best ministry is still in front of you! The best wine is when Christ is able to manifest Himself through us. Life is watching God work in my life, knowing His secrets when others are in the dark. Life is "150 gallons of joy"! Christ is also the almighty cleanser of the temple, not only a joy giver but a sin killer. |

4106 |
A complete view of Jesus is a smile on His face (miracle of the water to wine) and a whip in His hand (cleansing of the temple). Jesus came to deal with sin as a jealous lover; the temple was a symbol of the condition of the spiritual life of the people. When does sin go out of our hearts as God's temple? It's when Jesus comes in! |

4106 |
Jesus' passion for purity is most manifest when we get away from the cross (the animals of sacrifice) and the reality of being a dwelling place for God (the temple). His cleansing is not to harm us but to drive us back to the Atonement. Real faith is reality--going after Christ Himself. Life is a pure temple; it's Jesus entrusting Himself to us. |

(John 11) Chapter 3: Intro to Nicodemus |
4106 |
This first of 14 discourses recorded in the Gospel of John introduces us to Nicodemus, a real seeker of the Lord but a secret disciple. As Jesus explained the type of the bronze serpent lifted up in the wilderness as Himself, He also revealed Nicodemus as a "snake bitten" perishing sinner. The simplicity of faith is looking at the substitute Savior! |

4106 |
Faith is looking. Sight is a picture of believing but is not a substitute for believing. 700 years after Moses lifted up the serpent symbol in the wilderness, the people were worshiping it. Signs are wonderful as long as they remain signs to point to the reality (such as baptism and communion in our day). What is life? It is the eternal cure for perishing sinners. |

(John 13) Chapter 3:1-18 Problem Texts |
4106 |
The new birth is when God enters into a sinner's life. There is great encouragement in approaching problem texts by knowing what they don't mean. In John 3:5 Ed discusses the various approaches taken about the "water and the Spirit". The second problem text revolves around pre-Pentecost believers and their relationship to the Holy Spirit. As we rest in eternal facts, we're going to have some peace in our lives. |

4106 |
In John 3:16-17 the age old Calvinist/Arminian debate on what "world" means has principles about how to approach the problem. One of those principles is leaving God's truth in the Bible where He put it. The truth is the full acceptance of both extremes, holding fast to what Scripture plainly says and not basing truth on logic or deduction. |

Many people flocking to Jesus irritated the disciples of John the Baptizer. John knew, however, that in our service to the Lord, we are the friend of the Groom (the best man). In chapter 6 the Holy Spirit focuses on the truth of obedience. The feeding of the 5000 teaches that obedience is returning to the feet of Jesus for that which is necessary to fulfill His requirements. Peter's walking on the water (from Matthew 14) teaches that you cannot obey the Lord apart from a mighty miracle of God. In John 7 at the greatest of all feasts, the Feast of Tabernacles, the Lord Jesus advanced upon the thought of living waters as a spring towards missions--torrential rivers flowing through you!

Chapter 9 shows a great contrast between spiritual eyesight and spiritual blindness. Spiritual blindness is progressive, moving from ignorance to willful ignorance to unteachableness. The childlike spirit is open minded to truth from anybody and close minded to error. The discourse of our Lord Jesus at the Feast of Dedication in chapter 10 shows Christ as the Good Shepherd. We'll never see how great God is until we see how frail we are (like sheep). |

As the Lord guides His sheep, His leading is definite and specific. If He brings conviction, there is a specific area in which He deals. Satan loves to nag and gives an indefinite generality that brings condemnation. In chapter 10, Martha's error was looking to a doctrine (the resurrection) rather than to the Lord Jesus Himself. The invitation to the sheep is, "The Master is here and He's calling you to the truth of resurrection life!" |

The helplessness of "Lazarus living"--bound up with gravesclothes as a picture of a Christian living bound up in fleshly living--can only be overcome by a mighty miracle of God. Jesus is the cure for all our heart trouble. We can be as free from anxiety and fear about the world as God is. The four questions asked by the disciples are representative questions of things that would take away our peace: indwelling sin, the future, knowledge of God, and God's dealing with men. The Lord Jesus brings the spotlight back to Himself as the way, the truth, and the life that severs our need for a formula, a doctrine, or an experience.

(John 46) Chapter 14 - In Jesus Name and Two Advocates |
4106 |
Life is peace and rest. When I'm trusting in the Lord Jesus in simple faith I need never fret or fear about anything in the whole wide world! Praying "in Jesus name" is not about the words but an attitude of heart that trusts in Christ's merit. The Holy Spirit is not our "client" but Jesus' client who lives in our heart to defend the name, the reputation, and the cause of Christ. The Spirit is fighting for His Client and ultimately He's going to win His case! |

(John 47) Chapter 14 - Holy Spirit as Revealer and Manifester of Christ |
4106 |
I need the Holy Spirit to open the eyes of my heart to see Jesus. When the Spirit comes to us to convict the world of sin, He teaches Christians to live by faith, which consequently convicts the world of unbelief. The ruler of this world, Satan, has been cast out at the cross and in my life as a defeated foe. |

(John 48) Chapter 15 - Victor: The True Vine |
4106 |
Christ calls us to be of good courage because He has overcome the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the boastful pride of life. Christ has overcome everything that stands opposed to the will of God. Christians are in danger when they try to pick up fighting a war that Jesus already won. Faith is abiding in the True Vine, Jesus. |

(John 49) Chapter 15 - Abiding in the Vine |
4106 |
Life is the fruit that comes from abiding in Christ, the True Vine. A great place in the life of any Christian is when he realizes, "I am not the vine." You were placed in Christ; all you need to do is stay there. |

(John 50) Chapter 15 - Pruning |
4106 |
God is watching over the branches as the abide in Christ the Vine; His job is to make sure the Vine produces fruit. The whole responsibility of pruning from start to finish is in God's capable hands. He has only one pruning tool: the Word. Every time you see Christ in this Book you are pruned, growing toward conformity towards Christ. |
