(Zechariah 01) Introduction |
3521 |
The people of God had ceased building the temple not because of rebellion but because of being swallowed up with the busyness of life. If you've ever been discouraged, Zechariah puts his finger on the eight things that can possibly cause a spirit of heaviness in God's people. This book, being the most Messianic book of the minor prophets and "the most New Testament book in the Old Testament", gives the revelation of Christ we all need. |

(Zechariah 02) Chapter 01 |
3521 |
Before there can be encouragement, there has to be a willingness to be right with God. The first vision points us to Christ always being there; we've got to know in our hearts that God is active. The second vision encourages us that God has tailor made resolutions (smiths) for every problem (horn) you'll ever face! |

(Zechariah 03) Chapter 2-3 |
3521 |
When God is a wall all around me, it means that I am in God. When we try to put a "tape measure" around God, we limit Him and get discouraged. The vision of the wonderful cleansing of Joshua the high priest frees us from living in the the spirit of condemnation. Our failure doesn't make us any less dear to the Lord. |

Another reason for discouragement is taking upon oneself the burden of being God's testimony (the temple) in the world. Nothing will lift the spirit of heaviness faster than a revelation of God's total adequacy in terms of the Great Commission. True servants of the Lord are not the gifted and talented ones with great libraries and mastery of Greek and Hebrew but the sons and daughters of fresh oil--the Holy Spirit! |

3521 |
The vision of the flying scroll (the Word of God) appears at first not all that encouraging, but it points toward God's heart that every stain of unreality will be purged out of my life. The next vision of the woman called wickedness in the basket deals with discouragement about my inward tendencies toward sin. God will deal with this "factory of sin" within us, not just the liquor bottles (acts of sin) that are manifesting. |

(Zechariah 06) Chapter 06 |
3521 |
What was discouraging the remnant from temple building? God's ways. This final vision of the horses and chariots encourages us to trust in God's sovereignty, that even our enemies are fighting for us. The symbolic crowning of Joshua the high priest illustrates that as we spend all of our time crowning Christ, He (the Branch) will build our temple, our spiritual lives. |

(Zechariah 07) Chapter 7 |
3521 |
The question about fasting at its root was not about fasting or not fasting but whether it was really done for God. God delights in inward reality, not outward formality. Fasting is a picture, and once you get the reality, you can take or leave the pictures. |

Since chapter 8 marks the start of the prophecy sections of the book, Ed takes time to share on the four approaches Christians take to prophecy. What does your life look like after you've crowned Christ as King? |

Shepherd-kings must live after the pattern of the Shepherd-King--Christ. Ed expounds upon the characteristics of God's people reigning as shepherd-kings, such as being instruments of the Lord, being victorious over our enemies, and radiating with His beauties. "The true shepherd," remarks Ed, "wants to bring sheep deeper into the grace of God and unity of the Body." |
