I and II Samuel |
(I & II Samuel 01) Introduction |
3207 |
The major contribution of 1 & 2 Samuel is illustrating the kingship of Christ through human kings. One overarching theme is God calling attention to the internal, not external. A second significant theme is its Christ-centeredness, showing through the conflict of Saul how David (picturing Christ) comes to rule the entirety of our lives! |

(I & II Samuel 02) 1 Samuel Chapters 1-8 Overview |
3207 |
Chapters 1 - 3 highlight God's burden to make Himself known and the people's response of neglect. God did everything He could to make His presense known through the Ark of the Covenant, the tribe of priests, and the Nazirites, but the people only saw the pictures, not the invisible God. In chapters 4 - 8, by allowing the Ark to be stolen, God communicated that since the people didn't want Him, He'd be leaving. Outward form means nothing to the Lord without inward reality. |

(I & II Samuel 03) 1 Samuel Chapters 1-8 Overview Cont. |
3207 |
An invisible King cannot stay among a people who do not want Him. To trace the Ark is to trace the heart of God. The Ark's missionary journey in the land of the Philistines showed the triumph over the heathen gods and futility of it. The idol Dagon falling before the Ark proclaims, "I am the King; Mine is the throne!" The return of the Ark (chap.6) to a priestly town conveys, "I can't stay away from you." The victory at Mitzpah over the Philistines show that victory through the lamb comes to a people seeking the Lord Himself, not the pictures of Him.

Chapter 8 highlights the rejection of the invisible King. At the core of living by sight is a rejection of the lordship of Jesus Christ. Chapter 9 reveals God as the Sovereign One; God will not give up on me because I've given up on Him. Saul as king becomes a personification of the spiritual corruptions of the nation Israel. |

Through the signs given to Saul, God revealed Himself as the One who stands behind the scenes guiding every detail of his life and stands ready to provide all of his needs. Though God is rejected as King, He still stands ready to guide, provide, and transform life. Saul's first victory as king against Nahash ("serpent") underscores the bigger battle over the devil, the serpent of old. |

3207 |
The 8 stories about King Saul in chapters 13 through 15 point to a single overarching revelation of God. Saul, the religious man who has work to do for God, is contrasted with his son Jonathan, a spiritual man who trusts in the work the Lord will do. God is the One who delights in a direction of your heart (i.e. obedience) rather than in what you give Him (i.e. sacrifice). |

(I & II Samuel 07) 1 Samuel Chapters 16-27 |
3207 |
Chapters 16 through 27 introduce us to the 12 turbulent years of David's life from his anointing under Samuel to being hunted by King Saul. Some general observations of the section as a whole are God's honesty about His flawed people, His sovereignty, guidance and testing/trial. God was making David ready to take the throne through all of his trying experiences of life. |

(I & II Samuel 08) 1 Samuel Chapters 16-27 - David & Jonathan |
3207 |
In chapters 16 through 27 David pictures Christ in 3 ways: 1) In his union with Jonathan, 2) In his rejection and humiliation, and 3) In his victory over Goliath. Jonathan had to learn that union with David means enmity with Saul; we cannot be popular where Jesus Christ is unpopular. David was a rejected shepherd-king without a throne; someone else (Saul) occupied his throne. |

(I & II Samuel 09) 1 Samuel Chapter 17 - David & Goliath |
3207 |
David, the anointed shepherd-king from Bethlehem, prefigures Christ in his victory over Goliath, Israel's impossible enemy. A man after God's own heart recognizes the enemy as God's enemy and the battle as God's battle. As a sinner, David pictures the Christian and how God overrules every one of those sins for His glory. |

(I & II Samuel 10) 1 Samuel Chapters 15-31 - God's Dealings with David |
3207 |
Ed shares three stand alone blessings from the lives of Saul and Samuel about weeping, waiting, and withholding judgment. The great revelation of God is that He watches over His wayward child until he's stripped of everything but Himself. The tremendous extremes of David are a warning to us that our hearts are prone to wander and also an encouragement that God still delivers us in our foolishness. |

Saul disguised as someone else in the witch's house is a picture of Christian at the bottom of the bottom. God in the witch's house to give Saul His last call to repentance is a revelation of God's condescending mercy. The principle of the spoil goes to those who guarded the stuff is that God won the victory not the instruments He used. Fellowship (Jonathan) is a wonderful thing to strengthen you in God, but even if Jonathan isn't there, Jesus is all you need! |

God will establish His kingdom (2 Samuel 1-9) and He will keep it no matter what inward storms (chapters 10-12) or external storms (chapters 13-24) that assail it. How God sets up the kingdom under David is the same way in principle by which the kingdom of Christ is established in your heart. The kingdom of heaven is a spiritual kingdom established progressively (step by step) in the face of overwhelming opposition. |

What happens when God's king reigns over the whole landscape of our existence? The first step is that we go up and take the City of Peace (Jerusalem) and cast out the idols. Don't worry about all the Philistines (sins) in your life; move with God when He draws the sword from His sheath. |

3207 |
When the King is carried by a reverent people, blessing and joy result but irreverence brings forth death and barrenness. Irreverence, a low view of God, leads to pride, anger and disobedience. The new carts of man's traditions can obscure the clear Word of God. We need to take off the royal robe, stop trying to rescue God, and let God do the reigning. |

3207 |
God takes a wondrous new step in 2 Samuel 7, one of the key passages in the Old Testament. Why wouldn't let God let David build the temple? The picture would have been incomplete without Solomon; the kingdom of peace (Solomon) had to be established on the kingdom of war (David, foreshadowing the cross). Be very careful of "Nathans" that encourage you to do something for God rather than showing what God is doing for you.

3207 |
4 great principles of victory are illustrated by David's conquering of the many surrounding nations. Victory is God's, not man's; God Himself was David's victory. The message of the Gospel is God's full victory in every direction all at once. Victory means liberty so that even God's enemies are fighting for us. Because David had victory, he became a testimony. |

Mephibosheth, the lame son of Prince Jonathan, wonderfully illustrates redemption going from being a cripple from the fall and exiled from the king to accepted and adopted as one of the king's sons. Mephibosheth also depicts three stages of the Christian life: on your face in the presence of the king; at the king's table as one of the king's sons; and outside the camp in the place of rejection. |

In 2 Samuel 10 David has it in his heart to pour out kindness on his enemies. Those who reject the king's kindness, putting his messengers to an open shame, will be judged no matter what alliances they make. Chapters 11 and 12 illustrate 4 great truths: the depravity of man's heart, confession of sin, consequences of sin, and the grace of God.

David's refusal to go to war with the Ammonites illustrates a spiritual parallel in his heart of spiritual Ammonites. It takes a miracle of God to affect a tremendous attitdue change of hating the "Ammonites" within. The external conflicts in David's life are of the most aggravated form to illustrate that no opposition from the outside can undo the work of God in our souls. The book ends with victory: a psalm, strength of character, and need for the blood of the Sacrifice. |

The great revelation of God in 2 Samuel 13-20 is the sovereignty of God. God is using one war and earthly kingdoms to illustrate another war and spiritual kingdoms. It is another great revelation to learn that Joab and Absalom are your enemies. The varied attacks David as a man after God's own heart experienced are what we can expect in our own lives--overt enemies (Shimei), deceitful traitors (Ahithophel), and divisive brothers (Sheba). |

The characters of these sections are representative enemies personifying spiritual principles. David's only hope for the deadly heart attachments to worldly wisdom (Joab) and Absalom (attraction to beautiful things) is God Himself. God's Davids will face outward rejection (Shimei), hypocrisy and betrayal (Athithophel), and Shebas who work towards splitting the people of God. |

How David responded to the enemies he faced along the way is suggestive how Jesus Christ wants to live through us in the midst of foes. With Absalom he rested in the Lord while he bore the consequences of his sin. With Shimei he was the patient sufferer. David's friends comprised a band of handicapped and rejected people. |

The civil war between Israel and Judah revolved around their relationship to the king. There always seems to be a Sheba around to ignite the dry timber in groups and churches. It takes wisdom to deal with the instigators to preserve the people of God. The famine in David's reign illustrates the criticality of dealing with past sins that have a present continuance. |

The last words of David come as those of the inspired sweet psalmist of Israel speaking of the righteous ruler to come--Christ. How can I be a mighty man of the King? The "big problems" that many commentators have tread upon this chapter with combat boots do not in any negate the chief point of the Holy Spirit's instruction. David's sin seems to be in mustering an army to "help" God go after His own people. 2 Samuel closes with a revelation of the mercy of God. I'm going to make it to the end not because of any help I offer along the way but because of God's mercy through the blood of the Sacrifice! |
