(Hosea 01) Introduction to the Minor Prophets & Hosea |
3501 |
The Minor Prophets as a whole are "remnant books", have triumphant conclusions, and move towards consummation by emphasizing Christ's Second Coming. Hosea is a book about brokenhearted love on an earthly level with Hosea and his unfaithful wife and on a heavenly level with the LORD and unfaithful Israel. Hosea uses strong, shocking language of whoredom to drive home the point of the filthiness of sin. |

(Hosea 03) Chapters 4-13 |
3501 |
Hosea 4-13 depicts the enormity of the sins of Israel because of the severity of God's judgment. His judgment fell on all three parts of creation. God works as a moth or a lion when it's needed. God's severe judgment is finally illustrated by the graphic descriptions of the slaughter. |

(Hosea 04) Chapters 4-7 |
3501 |
The very essence of whoredom is not living in deep fellowship with the Lord. God's smitings are only temporary for those who return to the Lord. Chapter 7 warns against the "unequal yoke" as nauseating to the Lord, devouring strength, and destroying understanding. |

(Hosea 05) Chapters 8-14: God's Persistent Love |
3501 |
One of the strongest passages on the judgment of God (reaping the whirlwind in Hosea 8:7) reveals a principle of life. The birdseye view of chapters 11-14 is upon the love of the Lord. God's persistent love is one that keeps on loving in the face of persistent unresponsiveness in man.

(Hosea 06) Chapters 11-14: Restoration |
3501 |
Israel is a type of Christ (Hosea 11:1) in suffering, exaltation and as a channel of redemption. God calls to repentance by comparisons and contrasts in order to humble us. Chapter 14 summarizes the whole book in the wonders of God's transforming love through restoration. Restoration is simple, complete, by pure grace, greater usefulness, and a mighty miracle of God. |

(Hosea 07) Chapters 4-7 |
3501 |
Hosea 4-7 zoom in on God's mercy--His goodness confronting human need. Chapter 4 develops the brokenheart love of God as the Holy One who has been jilted. Chapter 5 says the Holy One must leave. In chapter 6 the Holy God has a problem: He wants to receive them but His holiness says no. Chapter 7 shows how Israel didn't even know they had backslidden by getting their eyes off Jesus Christ. |

(Hosea 08) Chapters 10-14: Conclusion |
3501 |
Israel had turned from reality to religion, misplacing the Lord (chapter 8), rejecting God's messengers (chapter 9), and producing fruit only for themselves (chapter 10). The heartbeat of God through Hosea is His love that is in turmoil to give them up yet justly deal with their sin. Our hope for returning to the Lord is His first turning to us. The deeper the plunge into sin, the more God's lovingkindness is glorified in the restoration! |
