Esther 01 Introduction |
3213 |
Esther is the greatest book in the Bible on the providence of God. God is ruling behind the scenes to preserve His people that said no to coming out of Babylon (bondage and worldliness). The legalist and the worldly Christian would be destroyed if it weren't for the invisible God ruling the affairs of men. |

Esther 02 The Providence Of God |
3213 |
"The providence of God," assures Ed, "is designed to give every Christian the utmost confidence in the utmost danger in the darkest hour." God can accomplish His ends by very insignificant means, such as King Ahasuerus having a sleepless night--that preserved not only Mordecai from hanging on the gallows but a nation and the Messianic line. |

Esther 03 The God of Providence |
3213 |
God rules the good and overrules the evil to rescue His people from themselves and to destroy the enemy. God is in charge of every decision, whether it be the fickle king or compromising saints. Mordecai and Esther made unwise decisions but God turned them for His own sovereign purposes. |

Esther 04 Chapter 01-06 The Providence Of God |
3213 |
Even when God's people sin, God is still in control. Mordecai's disrespect for civil authority (Haman) stirred up a plot to exterminate all the Jews--including the remnant in Jerusalem. Haman the Agagite goes back to the ungodly line of Esau and pictures flesh versus the spirit, but the "elder" (the flesh) shall serve the "younger" (the spirit) at the end. |

3213 |
God overrules the evil nature of man, as seen by Haman suddenly getting self-control when he saw his hated enemy Mordecai. Knowing that the Lord can restrain sinners from doing what they want to do brings a real rest. Ed's prayer is: "Lord, make the providence of God a mighty factor in my life." |

Esther 06 The Feast Of Esther |
3213 |
God is the God who engineers delays for His people as well as for the heathen. Even with wicked Haman God was delaying and trying to bring him to the end of himself. How God turned the curse onto a blessing was seen in sackcloth and ashes, fasting and "faith", but the people returned only to the picture and not to the Lord. |

3213 |
God has three principles of victory to those who say no: 1) self-defense against the enemy, 2) God putting fear on the nations, and 3) gaining the plunder from the enemy. The feast of Purim is a worldly celebration centered in man, characterized by reviling the enemy, party time, and deliberately leaving God out. |

(Ezra 01) Introduction Pt. 1 |
3209 |
Ezra serves as a foundational book for the final 100 years of the Old Testament known as the "restoration years". The historical setting of a remnant coming out of Babylonian captivity is a story that carries a timeless spiritual message. How does God restore His people that have failed to enter into His rest? God is always looking for a people right with Him (the temple) and surrounded by the knowledge of God (the walls). |

(Ezra 02) Introduction Pt. 2 |
3209 |
Ezra gives the story of 3 revivals and serves as the greatest summary of revival in the whole Bible. There are no spectacular miracles but is filled with the supernatural as we see God reigning on His throne. Revival #1 is deliverance from Babylonian captivity, where it seems like a dream--almost being born again again! Revival #2 is how to go forward in the Lord (building upon the foundation). Revival #3 climaxes with the need to see Jesus in this Book. |

(Ezra 03) Revival #1 |
3209 |
A restored temple is a picture of a restored union with the Lord. Just getting out of Babylon (Revival #1) is new life! King Cyrus is vital to Revival #1. Cyrus is the one who has victory over Babylon and anointed to proclaim liberty to the captives, and as such, prefigures Christ. The principle of Cyrus' decree is pure, unadulterated grace: all are welcome to return but nobody has to go. God stirs up a remnant through His messengers proclaiming His word. |

The "remnant" are those who responded to King Cyrus' emancipation decree to "escape" from Babylon. God calls the remnant--those who are true and faithful to the LORD--His treasure. The main revelation of Christ in Revival #1 is the faithfulness of God.

Zerubbabel shows the faith of the parents, who called him "stranger in Babylon". The first revival is led by Zerubbabel, one who is disconnected from this world. In chapter 2 the list of names of the remnant that returned shows how "remnant-conscious" God is. The chapter ends with Levites who dropped the LORD as their inheritance for the inheritance of Barzillai whose hope was in supernatural recognition through the priest's Urim and Thummim. |

(Ezra 06) Chapter 3: Introduction to Revival 2: The Altar |
3209 |
The spiritual message of Revival #2 is that we live again when we learn to rebuild the temple. The rebuilding of the temple begins with rebuilding the altar (the cross), coming back to the place where Jesus paid it all. Christ is the One who has "paid the price" for revival! |

The altar (cross) is the objective proof of new life; the temple (Christian life) is the subjective proof. The objective must be recognized before the subjective can be realized. How does God use the old prophet (Haggai) and the young prophet (Zechariah) to awaken His people from a 15-year spiritual coma? |

(Ezra 08) Causes For An Incomplete Temple |
3209 |
A major reason for an incomplete temple is self-sufficiency, as expressed by the words from the lips of the escaped remnant, "We ourselves will do it." Not only did they exclude the despised Samaritans but also the LORD Himself. The force of arms by the government to halt temple work provided what seemed to be a reasonable excuse to have an incomplete temple. Discouragement, fear and frustration (Ezra 4:4-5) is an apt description of the years of a Christian with an incomplete temple. |

(Ezra 09) Chapter 4: But By My Spirit |
3209 |
Why do Christians stop going on with the Lord? One key reason is self-confidence (legalism). Self-confidence is death to a completed temple. God must show us the human impossibility of building the temple (growing in the Lord) apart from His Spirit. We can't do it and He won't do it without us, but together we can do it! |

(Ezra 10) Shouting of Grace |
3209 |
The causes of an incomplete temple are the helplessness of man to do the impossible. God's cure is the Spirit of God. Another cause for an incomplete temple is insurmountable obstacles. God has promised in Zechariah 4 that anything standing in the way of a completed temple ("great mountain") He will level. God's cure for all these problems is grace (what He does, not what I do). |

(Ezra 11) Revival 2: No Condemnation |
3209 |
An incomplete temple dishonors the Lord. The enemies of the remnant dug up crud from long ago that caused the people of God to quit. This spiritual principle of condemnation is addressed by the young prophet Zechariah in his vision of Joshua the high priest standing before the LORD in dirty clothes. What encourages us to rebuild the temple is knowing how thorough our cleansing is in Jesus Christ, such that if the totality of God's vision looked at us, He would find not even a trace of sin! |

(Ezra 12) Christ the Glory of the Temple |
3209 |
Why do people quit (i.e. have an incomplete temple)? It's because they don't see Christ as the glory of the temple. Focusing on glory that's not glory (doctrinal correctness, spiritual gifts, church size, etc.) is a hindrance to a completed temple (mature Christian life). God shakes things up so that you can learn what true glory is. |

(Ezra 13) Revival 2: Conclusion |
3209 |
God's cures for an incomplete temple (immature church or Christian) are His Spirit, His grace, how He sees you perfect, and His Son. If I embrace God's cures, what will my life look like? I will have peace in my heart, have a life of blessing, and have the mark of God on my life that impresses upon others. The evidences of a completed temple (maturity) are dedication to the Lord, unity in the Body of Christ, and supernatural joy (no longer mixed with weeping)! |

(Ezra 14) Revival 3: Introduction |
3209 |
Revival #3 focuses on how to produce fruit--life in the completed temple. Ezra is one of the most unique books in the Bible in that it is indispensibly dependent upon other books in order to understand its message. So the "old covenant" vow that ends the book of Ezra in frustration and inability to perform is best explained in light of the qualitatively different "new covenant" vow made in Nehemiah. Revival #3 testifies that I live again when I learn how to see the Lord in this Book. |

(Ezra 15) Revival 3: More Than A Good Heart |
3209 |
Revival #3 emphasizes learning the Word of God, as Ezra emerges as a Bible teacher. The secret of moving from an old covenant vow to a new covenant vow is illustrated by the building of the wall. The remnant were not backsliders, as some might think, but loved the Lord in the way they volunteered, lived by faith, kept a careful testimony, and repented in humility. |

(Ezra 16) Revival 3: The Spirit of Life in Christ |
3209 |
Ezra 7-10 tells in story form what Romans 7 tells as doctrine: hating sin, loving God, and unable to perform. The only victory over the law of sin if bringing in a greater law: the law of the Spirit of life in Christ. God's rain on the remnant's old covenent repentance was both a blessing (acknowledging their heart's direction toward Him) and disapproval (the old covenant won't work). |

(Ezra 17) Revival 3: The New Covenant Vow |
3209 |
The root of every spiritual problem is always my knowledge of God; the solution is to go forward in the knowledge of God, as illustrated by the rebuilding of the wall. After the wall was built, the frustration of the old covenant vow at the end of Ezra gives way to the pure gladness and joy that comes from a heart knowledge of the Word of God. The new covenant vow to devote myself to this Book, rest and surrender is qualitatively different than the old covenant vow to quit sinning. |

(Ezra 18) Revival 3: Life Behind the Wall |
3209 |
Life behind the completed wall is a life that is lived in the light. Towards the world we're guarded; towards the Lord we're praising. Life lived "behind the wall" is an eager desire to be taught the Word of God, going beyond the letter, and desiring to dwell with the people of God. The last message in the Old Testament is the dedication of the wall with the sound of joy and rejoicing. Joy becomes your greatest testimony! |

The major contribution of 1 & 2 Samuel is illustrating the kingship of Christ through human kings. One overarching theme is God calling attention to the internal, not external. A second significant theme is its Christ-centeredness, showing through the conflict of Saul how David (picturing Christ) comes to rule the entirety of our lives! |

Chapters 1 - 3 highlight God's burden to make Himself known and the people's response of neglect. God did everything He could to make His presense known through the Ark of the Covenant, the tribe of priests, and the Nazirites, but the people only saw the pictures, not the invisible God. In chapters 4 - 8, by allowing the Ark to be stolen, God communicated that since the people didn't want Him, He'd be leaving. Outward form means nothing to the Lord without inward reality. |

An invisible King cannot stay among a people who do not want Him. To trace the Ark is to trace the heart of God. The Ark's missionary journey in the land of the Philistines showed the triumph over the heathen gods and futility of it. The idol Dagon falling before the Ark proclaims, "I am the King; Mine is the throne!" The return of the Ark (chap.6) to a priestly town conveys, "I can't stay away from you." The victory at Mitzpah over the Philistines show that victory through the lamb comes to a people seeking the Lord Himself, not the pictures of Him.

(I & II Samuel 19) 2 Samuel Chapters 10-11 |
3207 |
In 2 Samuel 10 David has it in his heart to pour out kindness on his enemies. Those who reject the king's kindness, putting his messengers to an open shame, will be judged no matter what alliances they make. Chapters 11 and 12 illustrate 4 great truths: the depravity of man's heart, confession of sin, consequences of sin, and the grace of God.

(I & II Samuel 20) 2 Samuel Chapter 12 - True Confession |
3207 |
True confession of sin deals not only with sin but the "sin factory" of the heart. Sinning in the light does not, unlike many legalistic methods affirm, put you out of fellowship with God. Walking in darkness is when I say 'no' to the revelation of God. |

(I & II Samuel 21) 2 Samuel Chapters 10-12 - Grace & Government |
3207 |
The consequences of David's sin of adultery and murder reaped a 20-year harvest of domestic affliction. Yet this was not punishment for his sin, for in grace the Lord had taken away his sin. We must learn to lay hold of the principle of grace while the wheels of government roll over our soul. |

It is a mercy of God to bring the right "Nathans" to you at the right time. No matter how badly you blow it, you may find in your God a great forgiveness. There is no internal storm that shall rage in your breast that can dislodge you from your place in Jesus Christ and what He's done in your life! |

(I & II Samuel 23) 2 Samuel Chapters 13-24 - Internal Conflict & External Conflict |
3207 |
David's refusal to go to war with the Ammonites illustrates a spiritual parallel in his heart of spiritual Ammonites. It takes a miracle of God to affect a tremendous attitdue change of hating the "Ammonites" within. The external conflicts in David's life are of the most aggravated form to illustrate that no opposition from the outside can undo the work of God in our souls. The book ends with victory: a psalm, strength of character, and need for the blood of the Sacrifice. |

(I & II Samuel 24) 2 Samuel Chapters 13-20 - Sovereignty of God |
3207 |
The great revelation of God in 2 Samuel 13-20 is the sovereignty of God. God is using one war and earthly kingdoms to illustrate another war and spiritual kingdoms. It is another great revelation to learn that Joab and Absalom are your enemies. The varied attacks David as a man after God's own heart experienced are what we can expect in our own lives--overt enemies (Shimei), deceitful traitors (Ahithophel), and divisive brothers (Sheba). |

The characters of these sections are representative enemies personifying spiritual principles. David's only hope for the deadly heart attachments to worldly wisdom (Joab) and Absalom (attraction to beautiful things) is God Himself. God's Davids will face outward rejection (Shimei), hypocrisy and betrayal (Athithophel), and Shebas who work towards splitting the people of God. |
