I and II Samuel |
(I & II Samuel 26) 2 Samuel Chapters 13-16 |
3207 |
How David responded to the enemies he faced along the way is suggestive how Jesus Christ wants to live through us in the midst of foes. With Absalom he rested in the Lord while he bore the consequences of his sin. With Shimei he was the patient sufferer. David's friends comprised a band of handicapped and rejected people. |

(I & II Samuel 27) 2 Samuel Chapters 20-21 |
3207 |
The civil war between Israel and Judah revolved around their relationship to the king. There always seems to be a Sheba around to ignite the dry timber in groups and churches. It takes wisdom to deal with the instigators to preserve the people of God. The famine in David's reign illustrates the criticality of dealing with past sins that have a present continuance. |

(I & II Samuel 28) 2 Samuel Chapters 21-22 |
3207 |
The clincher truth about victory is illustrated with giants related to Goliath. David's weariness pictures what it is like when we go against superhuman enemies in our own strength. Yet God raises up the right servants at the right time to take care of the giants while you're busy shining, radiating, the Lord Himself. Chapter 22 summarizes what has gone before: God as my maker and my keeper puts a song in my heart! |

(I & II Samuel 29) 2 Samuel Chapter 23 - Mighty Men |
3207 |
The last words of David come as those of the inspired sweet psalmist of Israel speaking of the righteous ruler to come--Christ. How can I be a mighty man of the King? Mighty men are those who know the victory is the Lord's, battle on the frontline for the blessing of others, are faithful where God has placed them, and minister unto the King's desires. |

(I & II Samuel 30) 2 Samuel Chapter 24 - Conclusion |
3207 |
The "big problems" that many commentators have tread upon this chapter with combat boots do not in any negate the chief point of the Holy Spirit's instruction. David's sin seems to be in mustering an army to "help" God go after His own people. 2 Samuel closes with a revelation of the mercy of God. I'm going to make it to the end not because of any help I offer along the way but because of God's mercy through the blood of the Sacrifice! |

Nehemiah |
(Nehemiah 01) Introduction |
3211 |
The book of Nehemiah closes out the historical section of the Old Testament and gives us one great picture to prepare you for the coming of Christ. God was restoring His testimony on the earth through the rebuilding of the temple and the wall. The message of Nehemiah is that God wants to burden and involve us in the rebuilding of the wall (progressive knowledge of God). Nehemiah had no idea whatsoever when he was a comfortable Christian in Shushan and he said yes to the burden of God how greatly he was going to be used! |

(Nehemiah 02) Chapters 1-6 |
3211 |
The two necessary conditions for building the wall (progressing in the knowledge of God) are a heart seeing and a heart building. There will be no restoration until God gives us eyes to see the walls are in ruins. As you wait on God with that burden, God begins to control the circumstances to make you follow your heart. Two things in Nehemiah's day that are always true are a fearlessness amidst opposition and heart builders free from distraction and legalism (spiritual usury). |

When the people looked to the walls of Jerusalem as their strength, not the LORD, then the LORD had to knock that down. God will knock down any wall that stands in between you and Him. 5 big things have to happen in "life behind the wall" before there can be a dedication of the wall: living in the light, hungering for the Word of God, being swallowed up in the greatness of God, union with Christ, and living in the Spirit. |

Nehemiah is God's last word (from the historical record) in the Old Testament. The last event of Nehemiah centers around the dedication of the wall, which in this setting meant initiating or starting over. God is willing to give you a fresh start in the knowledge of God. From the record, God gives that fresh start to those who purify themselves, rejoice in the Lord, and rest in the blood of Jesus. The outworkings of dedication is joy and walking in the light of the Word of God (i.e. reality). |

Ruth |
(Ruth 01) Introduction |
3205 |
Is it possible to have an oasis in a moral desert? Ruth answers that question. Ruth is a book of hope--the possibility of victory in the midst of defeat. There can be no oasis with fullness (chapter 1), courtship (chapter 2), union (chapter 3), and fruit (chapter 4). |

"The Lord wants to create out of each one of us," assures Ed, "an oasis in the moral desert through relationship with God, which results in giving Christ to the world." One of the five great revelations of God in bringing us from Moab (the world) to Bethlehem (the fullness of Christ) is El Shaddai, the All Sufficient One. A wonderful truth is how God turns our "Moabs" into blessing. |

Some have charged Ruth with immodesty, but Ed defends her chastity as evidenced in the Scriptures. The great truth of appropriation of the kinsman-redeemer is explained with a view to appropriating our heavenly Boaz, the Lord Jesus Christ. "The whole Christian life became alive," Ed testifies, "as I appropriated [Christ]." |

(Ruth 04) Chapter 04: Conclusion |
3205 |
The final chapter of Ruth revolves around 3 great facts: the other kinsman, the custom of the shoe, and the marriage of Boaz and Ruth. The other kinsman signifies every legal hindrance that would stand in the way of my union with Jesus Christ. The principle of the shoe is assurance that sin, death, Satan and the law no longer possess me; I am solely the property of Christ! The goal of the restored inheritance is fruit from a union with Jesus. |

Joshua |
(Joshua 01) Introduction |
3201 |
Joshua is first of the "victory books (Judges, Ruth) that are redemptive history telling the simple truth of looking unto Jesus by simple faith. There is no greater picture of Christ in the Bible than Canaan--the land of milk and honey pictures Christ, the life of the land of milk and honey! Joshua is going to tell you how to get out of the wilderness--perpetual sin, defeat and failure--into the life of Christ! |

(Joshua 02) Chapter 1:1-9 |
3201 |
The book of Joshua opens with the great foundational principles of preparation--simple faith always takes the land! All of the experiences of life, all human props being removed (like Moses), and calls to impossibilities (like crossing the Jordan at flood tide) are some of the ways God prepared Joshua, and in principle, prepares each and every Christian. |

(Joshua 03) Special: Judgment on Canaan |
3201 |
The challenging controversial wiping out of the Canaanites--man, woman, child and animal--must be approached first that God always does the best. This ultimate destruction turns our eyes onto the Lord who is a God of mercy (He made room for a Messianic nation to bring salvation to the world). As a God of holiness, sin will not go unpunished. God owns all things and absolutely retains the right to take human life and delegates limited responsibility to government to do the same. God is a God of longsuffering, who waited hundreds of years and gave numerous warnings and object lessons, before executing "His strange work" of judgment. |

(Joshua 04) Chapter 1:10-18 - Borderline Christians |
3201 |
A warning against being "borderline Christians" is another foundational principle of preparation. The borderline Christian is one who selects the good rather than the best; it is one who has stopped hungering after his God. They know all the right answers without actually having reality. As the sacred record shows, the logical conclusion of such a choice was that these tribes were the first into idolatry, and first into bondage and captivity. |

(Joshua 05) Chapter 2 - Conversion of Rahab |
3201 |
Rahab the harlot became the firstfruits of the Gentiles to display the love and mercy of God. The scarlet thread became a covenant seal of her salvation, that when God saw the red, He passed over her house! God accepts "dirty faith" (i.e. Rahab's lie) because He sees the direction of the heart and is a God of grace. The Israelites became missionaries just by living and letting a living God full of power do things for them. |

(Joshua 07) Chapter 4 - Monuments of 12 Stones |
3201 |
God invites every Christian to be a heart Levite, one who stands firm on dry ground and carries the throne high for all to see. The returning waters of the Jordan show the faithfulness of the Lord and no turning back for the Israelites. The monuments of twelve stones served as a missionary monument to show Himself, a reminder of what He had done, and a pledge of all He would do. |

(Joshua 08) Chapter 5 - The Knife, the Blood, and the Sword |
3201 |
The final preparation of faith prior to going in and possessing the land centers upon the knife, the blood, and the sword. The knife (circumcision) expresses inward victory over the sins of the heart as well as a weakening that gives God the glory for victory. The blood (Passover) teaches that you get into the Promised Land the same way you got out of Egypt--by faith's feeding upon Christ, the Passover Lamb. The sword (the Angel of the LORD) points us to the Lord Jesus Christ Himself as commander who must win the battle. |

3201 |
Ai served as a great warning to the people of God, who had some false ideas about themselves, victory, and the Lord Himself. God won at Jericho (the big battles); only God can win at Ai (the little ones). There is nothing so small in our Christian life that we can combat on our own. God often lets us lose battles that we might win the war; He makes the Valley of Achor (Trouble) a door of hope! |

(Joshua 15) Chapters 13-22 - Principles of Possession |
3201 |
Possessing Canaan is a grand object lesson about how to enjoy the Lord Jesus Christ. The casting of the lot has to do with resigned contentment--being happy about God's choices for us. There's always more to be possessed, an abiding enemy, and maintaining the possession by an attitude of our will over and over and over again. |

(Joshua 17) Chapter 17:14-18 - Children of Joseph |
3201 |
The fifth principle of possessing Christ is illustrated by Joshua's handling of the over blessed sons of Joseph. The blessing of God has dangers that come along with it, such as spiritual pride, passivity, doubt, softness, and fear. To enter in and possess Christ, we must clear the forest, that is, use to the full all that God has given us. Second, we can't ignore the Canaanites, those ugly resisters such as sin that aren't becoming to a "victorious Christian". |
