Old Testament Books History Ezra (Ezra 01) Introduction Pt. 1 3209 Ezra serves as a foundational book for the final 100 years of the Old Testament known as the "restoration years". The historical setting of a remnant coming out of Babylonian captivity is a story that carries a timeless spiritual message. How does God restore His people that have failed to enter into His rest? God is always looking for a people right with Him (the temple) and surrounded by the knowledge of God (the walls). Ed Miller Ezra_01Intro.mp3 Ezra
Old Testament Books History Ezra (Ezra 02) Introduction Pt. 2 3209 Ezra gives the story of 3 revivals and serves as the greatest summary of revival in the whole Bible. There are no spectacular miracles but is filled with the supernatural as we see God reigning on His throne. Revival #1 is deliverance from Babylonian captivity, where it seems like a dream--almost being born again again! Revival #2 is how to go forward in the Lord (building upon the foundation). Revival #3 climaxes with the need to see Jesus in this Book. Ed Miller Ezra_02IntroToEzra.mp3 Ezra
Old Testament Books History Ezra (Ezra 03) Revival #1 3209 A restored temple is a picture of a restored union with the Lord. Just getting out of Babylon (Revival #1) is new life! King Cyrus is vital to Revival #1. Cyrus is the one who has victory over Babylon and anointed to proclaim liberty to the captives, and as such, prefigures Christ. The principle of Cyrus' decree is pure, unadulterated grace: all are welcome to return but nobody has to go. God stirs up a remnant through His messengers proclaiming His word.  4 Old Testament Books History Ezra (Ezra 04) Chapters 1-2: Revival From Captivity Pt. 1 3209 The "remnant" are those who responded to King Cyrus' emancipation decree to "escape" from Babylon. God calls the remnant--those who are true and faithful to the LORD--His treasure. The main revelation of Christ in Revival #1 is the faithfulness of God. Ed Miller Ezra_04Chap0102_RevivalFromCapativity.mp3 Ezra 1-2
Old Testament Books History Ezra (Ezra 05) Chapters 1-2: Revival From Captivity Pt. 2 3209 Zerubbabel shows the faith of the parents, who called him "stranger in Babylon". The first revival is led by Zerubbabel, one who is disconnected from this world. In chapter 2 the list of names of the remnant that returned shows how "remnant-conscious" God is. The chapter ends with Levites who dropped the LORD as their inheritance for the inheritance of Barzillai whose hope was in supernatural recognition through the priest's Urim and Thummim. Ed Miller Ezra_05Chap0102_RevivalFromCapativity.mp3 Ezra 1-2
Old Testament Books History Ezra (Ezra 06) Chapter 3: Introduction to Revival 2: The Altar 3209 The spiritual message of Revival #2 is that we live again when we learn to rebuild the temple. The rebuilding of the temple begins with rebuilding the altar (the cross), coming back to the place where Jesus paid it all. Christ is the One who has "paid the price" for revival! Ed Miller Ezra_06Chap03_IntroRevival2TheAltar.mp3 Ezra 3
Old Testament Books History Ezra (Ezra 07) Chapters 3-4: Revival #2: Haggai & Zechariah 3209 The altar (cross) is the objective proof of new life; the temple (Christian life) is the subjective proof. The objective must be recognized before the subjective can be realized. How does God use the old prophet (Haggai) and the young prophet (Zechariah) to awaken His people from a 15-year spiritual coma? Ed Miller Ezra_07Revival2_Haggai_Zechariah.mp3 Ezra 4-5
Old Testament Books History Ezra (Ezra 08) Causes For An Incomplete Temple 3209 A major reason for an incomplete temple is self-sufficiency, as expressed by the words from the lips of the escaped remnant, "We ourselves will do it." Not only did they exclude the despised Samaritans but also the LORD Himself. The force of arms by the government to halt temple work provided what seemed to be a reasonable excuse to have an incomplete temple. Discouragement, fear and frustration (Ezra 4:4-5) is an apt description of the years of a Christian with an incomplete temple. Ed Miller Ezra_08CausesForAnIncompleteTemple.mp3 Ezra 4-5
Old Testament Books History Ezra (Ezra 09) Chapter 4: But By My Spirit 3209 Why do Christians stop going on with the Lord? One key reason is self-confidence (legalism). Self-confidence is death to a completed temple. God must show us the human impossibility of building the temple (growing in the Lord) apart from His Spirit. We can't do it and He won't do it without us, but together we can do it! Ed Miller Ezra_09Chap04_ButByMySpirit.mp3 Ezra 4-5; Haggai 1; Zechariah 4; 6:11-13
Old Testament Books History Ezra (Ezra 10) Shouting of Grace 3209 The causes of an incomplete temple are the helplessness of man to do the impossible. God's cure is the Spirit of God. Another cause for an incomplete temple is insurmountable obstacles. God has promised in Zechariah 4 that anything standing in the way of a completed temple ("great mountain") He will level. God's cure for all these problems is grace (what He does, not what I do). Ed Miller Ezra_10ShoutingOfGrace.mp3 Ezra 4-5; Zechariah 4
Old Testament Books History Ezra (Ezra 11) Revival 2: No Condemnation 3209 An incomplete temple dishonors the Lord. The enemies of the remnant dug up crud from long ago that caused the people of God to quit. This spiritual principle of condemnation is addressed by the young prophet Zechariah in his vision of Joshua the high priest standing before the LORD in dirty clothes. What encourages us to rebuild the temple is knowing how thorough our cleansing is in Jesus Christ, such that if the totality of God's vision looked at us, He would find not even a trace of sin! Ed Miller Ezra_11Revival2_NoRedemnation.mp3 Ezra 4; Zechariah 3
Old Testament Books History Ezra (Ezra 12) Christ the Glory of the Temple 3209 Why do people quit (i.e. have an incomplete temple)? It's because they don't see Christ as the glory of the temple. Focusing on glory that's not glory (doctrinal correctness, spiritual gifts, church size, etc.) is a hindrance to a completed temple (mature Christian life). God shakes things up so that you can learn what true glory is. Ed Miller Ezra_12ChristTheGloryOfTheTemple.mp3 Ezra 5 & 6; Haggai 2:6-9
Old Testament Books History Ezra (Ezra 13) Revival 2: Conclusion 3209 God's cures for an incomplete temple (immature church or Christian) are His Spirit, His grace, how He sees you perfect, and His Son. If I embrace God's cures, what will my life look like? I will have peace in my heart, have a life of blessing, and have the mark of God on my life that impresses upon others. The evidences of a completed temple (maturity) are dedication to the Lord, unity in the Body of Christ, and supernatural joy (no longer mixed with weeping)! Ed Miller Ezra_13Conclusion.mp3 Ezra 6:16-22; Zechariah 3-4; Haggai 2
Old Testament Books History Ezra (Ezra 14) Revival 3: Introduction 3209 Revival #3 focuses on how to produce fruit--life in the completed temple. Ezra is one of the most unique books in the Bible in that it is indispensibly dependent upon other books in order to understand its message. So the "old covenant" vow that ends the book of Ezra in frustration and inability to perform is best explained in light of the qualitatively different "new covenant" vow made in Nehemiah. Revival #3 testifies that I live again when I learn how to see the Lord in this Book. Ed Miller Ezra_14IntroRevival3.mp3 Ezra 7 - Nehemiah 10
Old Testament Books History Ezra (Ezra 15) Revival 3: More Than A Good Heart 3209 Revival #3 emphasizes learning the Word of God, as Ezra emerges as a Bible teacher. The secret of moving from an old covenant vow to a new covenant vow is illustrated by the building of the wall. The remnant were not backsliders, as some might think, but loved the Lord in the way they volunteered, lived by faith, kept a careful testimony, and repented in humility. Ed Miller Ezra_15Revival3_MoreThanAGoodHeart.mp3 Ezra 7-10
Old Testament Books History Ezra (Ezra 16) Revival 3: The Spirit of Life in Christ 3209 Ezra 7-10 tells in story form what Romans 7 tells as doctrine: hating sin, loving God, and unable to perform. The only victory over the law of sin if bringing in a greater law: the law of the Spirit of life in Christ. God's rain on the remnant's old covenent repentance was both a blessing (acknowledging their heart's direction toward Him) and disapproval (the old covenant won't work). Ed Miller Ezra_16TheSpiritOfLifeInChrist.mp3 Ezra 7-10; Romans 7
Old Testament Books History Ezra (Ezra 17) Revival 3: The New Covenant Vow 3209 The root of every spiritual problem is always my knowledge of God; the solution is to go forward in the knowledge of God, as illustrated by the rebuilding of the wall. After the wall was built, the frustration of the old covenant vow at the end of Ezra gives way to the pure gladness and joy that comes from a heart knowledge of the Word of God. The new covenant vow to devote myself to this Book, rest and surrender is qualitatively different than the old covenant vow to quit sinning. Ed Miller Ezra_17TheNewCovenantVow.mp3 Ezra 9-10; Nehemiah 8-9
Old Testament Books History Ezra (Ezra 18) Revival 3: Life Behind the Wall 3209 Life behind the completed wall is a life that is lived in the light. Towards the world we're guarded; towards the Lord we're praising. Life lived "behind the wall" is an eager desire to be taught the Word of God, going beyond the letter, and desiring to dwell with the people of God. The last message in the Old Testament is the dedication of the wall with the sound of joy and rejoicing. Joy becomes your greatest testimony! Ed Miller Ezra_18LifeBehindTheWall.mp3 Nehemiah 8-12
